From the RMT:
Chapter Coordinator

Greetings, DIVAS!

Hope everyone had a wonderful summer – mine was fun, but not nearly long enough!  I’m not ready for the snow and dreary days of winter.

SET was fabulous this year.  The President’s luncheon was well attended and we had a great time getting acquainted.  We had very lively discussions on ways to improve Regional Convention and how the region can better serve the choruses.  This year the Regional Management Team invited members to get to know us and learn about our duties.  Those who attended had some great questions for us and it was nice to have some time to talk with them.  Now it’s time to start thinking about Regional Convention in the spring.  Hope to see you all there!

Communication and Technology Coordinator

The nomination / appointment process for your 2006-2007 Region 13 Regional Management Team is underway.  We have wonderfully qualified applicants for every position except for the Events Coordinator.  If you have a talent or passion for planning events, this is a great position and a chance to work with a very experienced team of planners. Please contact me at 907.688.3434  or cherab@mtaonline.net for a job description and application.

Is your chorus having a show, coaching session, or special event?  Please let Region 13 know about it so we can get it on the Region 13 Calendar website.  This is also a good place to check when you are setting dates for your events.  Please send the dates of your events to Tracy Cogdill at 907.457.5244 (home) or email tracie@mosquitonet.com.

SET has come and gone, but the words of wisdom from SET Faculty, Gene Bender, will linger on forever. Gene taught us that the words and the emotions behind those words are the key to a truly compelling performance. We have to emotionally tell the story and touch the audience's heart and in turn, we will touch the hearts of the audience members with pencils (judges). We have to truly open ourselves up and let our emotions hang out. We might cry, get angry, laugh; it doesn't matter, because it's all good.  So let's make it everyone's goal this year to keep the audience's collective noses out of the program. We need to move them, touch them, and they will love us for it.

Education Coordinator

Wow!  If you missed SET this year you will have a lot of catching up to do. Gene Bender taught us a lot about being real and “in the moment” when we are performing a song. He told us we can’t take on a character but need to bring our emotions from within. He brought awesome emotions out from choruses and quartets alike giving songs real meaning for the audience.

There were good responses regarding the track system. If there was any disappointment it was because people wanted to be able to take advantage of everything and couldn’t because of concurrent scheduling. I’m glad we had so much to offer everyone and am grateful to all who invested time and energy in teaching sessions. For more information about upcoming SETs, click here!

TAG (Together And Growing) visits are going very well. Two-thirds of all our choruses have either had a visit from faculty or arranged for one. It’s awesome to have so much interest in refining our chorus operations and performance skills. A huge thank you goes to the Regional Faculty folks and Sally Wallace, administrator, who have given so much effort in making this program the success it is.

I believe we have much to be proud of educationally in our region and know we will continue to grow in all aspects of our craft.

Events Coordinator

A huge thank you to our delightful SET Coordinator, Juanita Harwood, and her team. What a wonderful event! If you didn't make it this year, plan now to attend next August  4 - 6. Guest faculty will be Debbie Connelly from Yakima, WA. Visit www.sairegion13.org/set.html for more information.

While you are searching the web, please check out the Region's brand new "DIVA" product website at:
www.cafepress.com/sai_divas. You can purchase all kinds of "Diva" products at reasonable prices. A small amount of each purchase benefits  our region and will help defray some of our expenses.

Don't forget to put our Region 13 Annual Convention on your calendar, April 20 - 23 in Spokane.

Finance Coordinator

In the financial world, I've set up our new accounting package and have been having fun trying out its many features.  (Sometimes too much is NOT a good thing-I change my mind too often!)

We spent a great deal of time since last spring trying to tie up loose ends for our CAL members. We're still getting checks dribbling in.  PLEASE continue to send them to me.

Our end of summer SET was wonderful.  Final invoices are coming in so, hopefully we'll not do too badly. I would like to open the 'floor' up to some discussion about what to do for AV equipment at these events. It is astronomically expensive to rent from certain hotels. So high that Dottie and I are thinking that if it's not included in our room costs in the future, we'll have to do without. Any and all scathingly brilliant ideas are welcome. Or if anyone knows a company that would like to donate to our worthy cause (and get a wonderful tax deduction), perhaps Dottie and I can come up with a proposal for purchasing some equipment for the region?

I always seem to have random thoughts floating around and like to pass them on to see what germinates. Great minds do great things-together!

Membership & Marketing Coordinator

Hello!  I hope that all is going well in your various choruses. I have just returned from Detroit and how I wish the general public could witness how WONDERFUL we are. Every competitor should be so proud of their performance! The level of talent in our Sweet Adeline quartets and choruses is simply amazing. How can such an incredible organization be such a well kept secret?

Perhaps the most important part of our product is the deep, long-lasting friendships we build with other women. Where else can women of all ages, colors, faiths, and walks of life be accepted simply because they love to sing? Think about all of that and get out there and tell the world. YOU are the key to the longevity of your chorus and to the entire organization. Sell our product by word of mouth “advertising”. We have a very unique product. PLEASE don’t keep Sweet Adelines a secret! For more tips on what you can do to share the word about Sweet Adelines, click here.

Team Coordinator

Hoorah! for all the divas in Region 13.  We got a grand start at SET in September and stay tuned (don't you love puns?) because there are more ideas and resources to come to help you find more divas in your neighborhood.

Your Regional Management Team held a "get acquainted " session at SET. Your input was very valuable. Watch for new and expanded programs and schedules at future Region 13 events in response to your suggestions and requests. Your chorus "Sparkplug" will be sharing news as these plans progress.

Election time is near for our Region. We have outstanding candidates for your consideration. Be watching for ballots and information about them.

Your Regional Management Team works diligently to provide challenging and well planned events while keeping an eye on the budget. As always, your suggestions and ideas are very welcome.  Contact me or any other member of the Team listed in this bulletin. We want to hear from you.

Visual Leaders Workshop 2005

What happens when you put 25 choreographers in one room together for an entire day? Spontaneous combustion!  Region 13 hosted a Visual Leader Workshop on September 16, featuring SET faculty, Gene Bender, for part of the afternoon session. We spent the morning analyzing chorus performance videotapes and discussing how we, as visual leaders, can help our choruses move “up the ladder” to achieve higher scores in competition. Gene fired up the afternoon with a class on characterization, and we spent the remainder of the day in small groups helping one another create visual plans (thanks to additional group leaders Lisa Allen, Cindy Hamilton and Kay Scharr). Rave reviews have convinced me that we need to create an opportunity for visual leaders to meet and work together every year.

For those of you who missed this fun day, here are a few summarizing thoughts:

Visual Leader ABCs
Often, Visual Leader time gets consumed by creating, teaching, drilling and polishing physical moves for chorus songs. However, our role can and should be much broader.  Consider these ABCs: hints for baking the perfect “visual cake”:

Assist each singer to learn visual performance skills. Everything starts with the right ingredients.  For effective visual performance, a singer must have championship posture, energy, stamina, facial animation, and physical freedom. Jump out front many times during every rehearsal to encourage singers to realign their bodies, generate energy and loosen up!

Bring joy to rehearsals and performance. Joy is the fuel that “cooks” our basic ingredients into a passionate and exciting performance. Visual Leaders are in a perfect position to take responsibility for this area. Incorporate “Energy Boosters” into your rehearsals and infuse the chorus frequently with activities that will make them laugh and play.

Create a climate of confidence and risk-taking attitudes. With the basic ingredients in place and a steady stream of positive energy fueling each singer, the chorus is ready to “frost the cake.” We chose singing over other hobbies because (somewhere within us) we want the thrill of performing and competing. Visual Leaders can promote these goals by continually challenging singers to reach for deeper emotions, stronger personal commitment, and higher levels of risk in all aspects of performance.

Go forth and be mighty, Visual Leaders! Your choruses await your enthusiasm, encouragement and challenge.

Congratulations to our 2006 International Competitors!

Our heartiest congratulations go to Unplugged, Transit and Spirit of Spokane for their wonderful representation of North Pacific Region 13 in Detroit last month.

(Photos below: Spirit of Spokane Chorus, our 2005 Region 13 Chorus Champs (top); Transit, the 2005 Region 13 Quartet Champions (middle); Unplugged, also represented Region 13 and 26 as last year's 6th Place Quartet (bottom)

Spirit of Spokane, under the direction of Mike Elliott.

Transit (l-r): Corinna Garriock, Katy Hawley, Kari Metzger and Leslie Liberman

Unplugged (l-r): Anna Chamberlain, Julie Hagstrom, Judy Pozsgay and Teresa McCafferty

Despite last minute changes in venue thanks to Hurricane Katrina, they all weathered the storm (I know, really bad pun!) and put on captivating performances.

Unplugged finished with Seventh Place medals and will be back again next year! Transit and Spirit of Spokane can also be very proud of their time on stage.

Are you SET for the future?

Get out those calendars NOW!! SET has been planned for the next three years and you won’t want to miss a one of them.

Next year, SET will be held August 4-6, 2006, in Yakima, WA, with Debbie Connelly, lead of the BUZZ and Showtime, and assistant director of Toast of Tampa Show Chorus. It will be a fabulous weekend focused on energized singing and performance skills.

In 2007, SET will be August 3–5 with Diane Porsch (location to be determined). Diane is Buffalo Gateway Chorus' Master Director, and is a past SAI Board Member, currently a member of the International Faculty, and is a Certified Showmanship Judge!

In 2008, we will have a joint weekend session with Region 26 on September 19-21, with Rumors, the 1999 Queens of Harmony (location to be determined). This will be a "wild and crazy" weekend full of fun and unsurpassed learning.

So get these days on your calendar and plan to join us at our summer workshops.

Share the Secret!

I do hope your chorus has started using the material provided in the DIVAS WANTED! Campaign. This entire marketing tool is based upon a concept of educating our chorus members in the art of the soft sell approach exhibited by a smart sales force.

If you have not read the book, “Creating Customer Evangelists” by Ben McConnell, you are missing a wonderful marketing tool. Don’t let the word “evangelist" scare you. In this context it simply means “the bearer of good tidings”! And the tidings, or news, regarding the harmonies of barbershop music, should be shared with all who might want to listen or participate in this wonderful hobby.

We have such a dynamic product to “sell” or “share”.) Yes, we get together for weekly rehearsals, but think of all of the other elements of the Sweet Adeline life: We share dreams and the experiences of preparing for those dreams. Where else can those of us who are no longer spring chickens put on stage make-up and sparkly clothing and go sing and dance (without getting arrested!)?

Perhaps the most important part of our product is the deep, long-lasting friendships we build with other women. Where else can women of all ages, colors, faiths, and walks of life be accepted simply because they love to sing? Think about all of that and get out there and tell the world. YOU are the key to the longevity of your chorus and to the entire organization. Sell our product by word-of-mouth advertising. We have a very unique product. Please don’t keep Sweet Adelines a secret.

Have YOU personally talked in glowing terms about your chorus or quartet to just one person in the last week? We have over 800 members of this region. Let’s see ... 800 x 52 weeks is 41,600 advertising slots a year if all of us just tell one person a week about our hobby. And that entire advertising campaign is FREE! Endorse our product, ladies!Truly, you are the key to making DIVAS WANTED! an effective marketing campaign.

For complete information about the DIVAS WANTED! campaign, visit the Sweet Adelines website.

Chorus and Quartet Chatter

Coeur d'Alene Chorus
Age is a Beautiful Thing

The finer things of life all get better as they age: wine, antiques and women’s barbershop music. The Coeur d’Alene Chorus has reached a milestone of making chords ring for twenty years.

In celebration of this achievement we have dedicated our upcoming November 13 show to highlight our twentieth anniversary. We will be using a mannequin display of all the chorus costumes spanning the last twenty years to decorate the stage area…even the costumes some members had hoped that they’d never have to see again (at least they won’t have to wear them!). We decided to nix the fashion show idea in the early planning stages. A high-tech power point presentation will feature memories from the past to the present.

The show is called “Harmony Confidential”. It is a musical mystery comedy that will provide plenty of laughs along with entertaining barbershop music. We are taking this opportunity to invite all of our former members to learn the song "How We Sang Today" and join us on stage to sing the final number. We are looking forward to having a great time celebrating the life of the chorus with every one that attends.

Chorus life, as in everyday life, is full of changes. Last minute riser replacement, added choreo, and tempo changes to the music you have already learned are just a few of the changes we experience as chorus members. The Coeur d’Alene Chorus is going to experience a major change that is in the process right now. Our founding director, Sally Wallace, has faithfully led the chorus for the last twenty years. She dedicated her time and energy and poured her heart into doing whatever was needed for the chorus to succeed. Sally sought to improve her knowledge and musical skills over the years, and has left a lasting legacy in the lives of women she has touched with the love of barbershop music. Don’t panic, Sally isn’t leaving the chorus, she just wants a chance to SING after all these years! She is joining the ranks of all you wonderful baritones.

Sally’s retirement left a void in the chorus that has recently been filled after a Director search. Bianca Perry, of the Spirit of Spokane Chorus, will begin to transition into the Director’s position after our November show.

So no matter how you view it, age and change are beautiful things. All of us in the Coeur d’Alene Chorus embrace the changes that come with a chorus celebrating a twentieth anniversary. Tip a glass with us to toast our bright future as we embark on the journey of the next twenty years.

Harmony Northwest

Harmony Northwest Chorus has been very busy this year. We sang at the Samish Island festival and worked at the rest stop for one of our fundraisers. August ended with selling scones and curly fries at the Lynden Fair. We have had a very successful membership drive with five new members joining us in September. We welcome new members Jeanette van Merlin, Kay Marsh, Sue Farrar, Doty Rice, and Nancy George.

We are now getting ready for our Christmas performance at the Bellis Fair Mall in Bellingham. We are also getting ready for our annual show in February called Razmajazz. Hope to see everyone at our show!

Spirit of Spokane

After thinking for over 16 months we would be competing in New Orleans, we were all shocked when Katrina ravaged that wonderful city. However, our own disappointment was trivial compared to the devastation experienced by the people of New Orleans. When it became clear there was no way Sweet Adelines would be able to hold the convention there, some of us began to wonder whether there would even be a convention in 2006.

Oh, ye of little faith! Never underestimate the powers of determined and capable women! In just 5 short weeks our International staff moved the entire convention halfway across the country. Anyone who has ever worked to put together something like this, even on a regional level, knows the amount of work and time needed to organize these kinds of events. As those of you who went to Detroit this year can attest, the competition went like clockwork, the venue was fabulous, and the people of Detroit welcomed us with open arms. Kudos to our International staff for their tireless efforts to pull this years convention out of the realm of “impossible” and make it a very memorable 60th anniversary!

Our chorus organizers had their own set of headaches getting the rooms transferred to Detroit and each of us had lots of fun getting airline reservations changed. Most of the airlines were very accommodating, but one in particular (who shall remain nameless) made things very difficult for some of our members. They finally refunded the fares, but not until most of us had returned home. It was all worth it, however, when we stepped up on that beautiful stage.  What an honor to perform at the International level and to sing for our sisters in harmony!

A HUGE THANK YOU to Region #13 for all your support! The money from the HOW Fund was a big help, and we want you to know how much we appreciate all you do for us!

Unplugged Quartet

We had a wonderful time in Motown, USA! The fact that our International staff was able to pull off the move from New Orleans to Detroit in just a few weeks was beyond amazing. There may have been hitches along the way, but we never saw them. The International staff is incredible.

The move to Motown was good one for us. Teresa got to visit with her Great-Aunt Sally, who pointed out that they hadn't seen each other in almost 20 years! Plus two of her aunts from Western Pennsylvania were able to make the trip to Detroit for the contest.

Judy's parents drove down from Toronto to attend the convention. It was the first time her parents had seen us in person (they've only ever seen video or heard the CD). They even got to meet Chris, Judy's boyfriend, who got there just in time to see us on Wednesday night.

Anna and Julie's parents were also able to make the trip and get all their arrangements switched from New Orleans to Detroit, as were Julie's husband Ron and daughter, Megan.

In all, we had thirteen family members along for the journey! We traveled to Greektown, a section of Detroit, on both Friday and Saturday nights to have big family dinners. Luckily, we were able to get some family photos! There will be pictures on our website soon of the four of us with all eight of our parents. The funny part of the family photos was that when we were taking them, other Sweet Adelines (whom we didn't know) were also in the restaurant and they started taking photos of us, too!!

Thank you all for all your good wishes and encouragement. We're looking forward to another year and by Saturday night were already working on what to do for Las Vegas!

See you in Spokane!

The 2006 Alaskan Women of Note Calendar

The Top of the World Chorus had a lot of fun this past year posing for their 2006 Women of Note wall Calendar. The idea started when the chorus was performing in Seldovia (a small fishing village) last summer. The movie "Calendar Girls" had just come out and we were all talking about it around the kitchen table. Someone jokingly said "WE should do something like that!" and the calendar was born!

Meet Miss July!

This unique wall calendar (11" x 17" opened) showcases members of TOTW doing Alaskan things "Sweet Adeline Style". You'll see members snowboarding, using chain saws, kissing fish, gardening and even mowing the lawn under the midnight sun in their Sweet Adeline garb.  It's a lot of fun and you'll be guaranteed a laugh a month.  Can you say "Christmas presents"?

Quotes from customers:
  "It's almost Stepford Wife-ish"
"Reminds me of the show Desperate Housewives"
"I love the outhouse photo" (hmm)
"What kind of fish is that?"

Calendars are $10 US each, plus $1 shipping/handling. A portion of the proceeds will go to the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation is dedicated to education and research on breast cancer causes, treatment and the search for a cure.

Visit www.topoftheworld.org to order your calendar today and to view a sample calendar page. Group orders welcome. Our calendar girls will even autograph the calendar for you on request!
