Say
What?
Clearing up some terminology...
We all get comments from
judges, coaches, directors, section leaders and sometimes our
riser-mates that seem confusing. It’s frustrating when they use
a word we don’t understand! So to continue with last month's
article on this subject, I’d
like to talk about the term resonance.
Resonance
Resonance is a word we
hear often in our barbershop style of music. Is it confusing?
Yes, because it means different things at different times to
different people!
Resonance, in its plainest
form, is the ability to amplify sound. When sound is created by
the vocal folds, the result is an unpleasant buzzing sound. We
use the soft and hard tissues to change the buzz into pretty
vowels and consonants that please our musical ear. People think
the nose is the primary resonator. While the nose plays a big
part in resonating (there are many cavities for sound to enter),
we also use the sinuses behind our eyes, our soft and hard
palates, our teeth, jaw, tongue, lips and larynx to resonate
sound.
What do I do with all
of this information?
As singers, we can think
of resonance as basically two different things that need to be
balanced in the end. First, there is forward resonance. If we
sing with only forward resonance, the sound goes solely into the
nose creating a pointed, pingy, nasal sound. The second part of
resonance is space. If we sing with only space, the sound is
directed into the back of the throat, resulting in a woofy,
covered, damp sound.
Excellent singers use both
forward resonance and space. In essence, they sing with a lot of
space in their throats, a lifted soft palate, and then direct
the sound into the cavities behind their nose.
Two tricks for finding
balanced resonance:
- Try talking a song in
its approximate pitches, like Julia Child. Let the voice
find a vertical path of sound and don’t be tempted to put
the sound backwards into the soft palate. Notice how there
is a lot of space in the sound. The sound seems to travel
vertically up behind the nose and out the forehead.
- Snort! Go ahead – no
one is around – snort really loud and feel the snort space.
Now, put your singing into the snort space. Notice how it is
open and free in the back, but tall and projected in the
front.
Tips for finding
forward resonance:
- Bend over at the
waist and sing – you will notice how the sound falls more
forward into the nose.
- Sing on an “N” or
“NG” and notice how the sound moves forward into your nose.
Tips for finding more
space:
- Lift the soft palate
as high as possible with a yawn and direct the sound into
the dome of space that’s created.
- Imagine filling the
space around the back of your head with sound.
Resonance should not be
used as a catch-all word. If you are asked to sing with more
resonance, ask for clarification on what’s needed specifically.
If more ping, ring, or point in your sound is called for, it
means more forward resonance is needed. If a bigger, rounder,
warmer sound is required, it means more space is needed.
Singing with resonance is
one of the hardest concepts to fully understand. I know this
column does not address everyone’s struggles with this issue,
but I hope it serves to clarify and answer some questions
regarding resonation.

Alaska or
Bust!
Have you purchased your airline tickets for
Anchorage yet? If not, read these travel tips from the gals at
Alaska Sound Celebration. We’re
used to making this annual trek and we’ve learned a few things over the years.
Here are some of our favorite tips for travel and saving money along the way:
Saving Money
InTune
about special rates
that the Region has rounded up.
Every night put your
spare change in a jar. It adds up quickly.
Skip those morning
mochas and lattes for awhile; they can really add up (then
put the saved money in your spare change jar!).
Plan your meals
around the sales at the grocery store.
De-clutter your house
and have a garage sale.
Put your really good,
used things up for sale on
Craig's List or eBay.
Booking Travel
- Alaska Airlines runs
a sale in October and November on travel to and from Alaska.
Click here to read the sidebar in this
InTune
about these special rates or check the
regional web site for more information.
- Apply for an
Alaska
Airlines VISA card and receive free bonus miles. Many times
the bonus miles are enough to get you a free, or
reduced-price, ticket right away.
- The Alaska Airlines
VISA card also earns you one companion fare each year. This
allows you and a buddy to fly for the price of one, plus
$100 and taxes on the second ticket. You can split the cost
of the two tickets between friends.
- Use airline miles to
reduce the cost of your ticket or to get a free ticket. Book
early as the free seats go fast.
- Sometimes booking
departure and return dates for a Tuesday or Wednesday
reduces the cost of your fare.
- Fly on red-eye
flights (i.e., flying during the middle of the night)
reduces your cost.
Happy travels and we’ll see you in
Anchorage in April.

Imagination to Reality
Many of you are juggling extra rehearsals,
shows, competitions, holiday performance preparation, music education and
community involvement and you may ask yourself, can I do it all? The answer is
yes, but mental work and a change of attitude are necessary! All you need is an
open mind, concentration, the ability to visualize, enthusiasm and persistence.
If
you are getting ready to sing in competition, take a few minutes every morning
to visualize the tasks you will do from waking up the morning of competition,
dressing, eating, putting on your makeup, doing warm-ups, walking backstage,
getting on the risers, hearing the announcer introduce your chorus, singing your
songs with executed choreography, listening to the thunderous applause,
listening to placement and accepting an award and being happy and proud of your
accomplishments.
Repeated thoughts affect and shape the
subconscious mind. This will control your behavior, desires, actions and
reactions. Use visualization daily to learn music, choreography, facilitate a
meeting, deliver your speaking part in a show, or to simply have a positive
attitude!
Limitations are in your mind and it is up
to you to rise above them.
You can do it!

Young Women in Harmony
A Shining
Example: Alaska A Cappella U
The Young Women in Harmony (YWIH) program
reaches out to young women through the art of barbershop harmony and we’ve had
some exciting successes in Region 13! Here’s one example:
In
March, they were just a group of middle-schoolers learning barbershop tags in
the little town of Houston, Alaska. By October, some were university graduates!
Graduates of Alaska A Cappella U, that is, coordinated by Chera Boom
and Melodee
Risi of Alaska Sound Celebration's quartet,
Impromptu, as well as other Impromptu
members
Sandy Sloat and
Linda Kile.
The all-day festival enabled 25 young
women from Anchorage and surrounding communities to explore the excitement and
joy of a cappella singing. That evening, the young women performed two
songs on ASC’s fall show and joined the chorus in their finale. We hope to hear
more about Alaska A Cappella U as time goes on.
It
was only fitting that the clinician for the festival was
a cappella Joy Chorus director,
Nikki Blackmer, for her own chorus boasts a YWIH quartet. And way up north, the
Fairbanks Frontier Chorus has a couple of small ensembles, as well as a high
school group that has performed on their show. Your Region 13 YWIH Coordinator,
Peggy McBride, encourages each chorus to start
a YWIH program today.
From quartet, to ensemble, to university, there are numerous ways to reach young
women in our communities. As Impromptu so aptly puts it “Get the
music out there any way you can, and the craft will sell itself!”
More about the
YWIH program can be found here. The YWIH materials for music
educators are available at no charge from Sweet Adelines International Sales.
You can obtain assistance with festival planning and teaching through the
director of education.

Chorus Chatter
Alaska Sound Celebration Chorus
As I write this article,
Alaska Sound Celebration is
in our last week of preparations for the Sweet Adelines International Convention
and Competition. Thanks to coaches Jim
Arns, Sandy
Marron, Judy
Pozsgay, Jan and
Dana Gervais and our
directors, Peggy McBride and
Karen Leet, our finesse
level is way up and our confidence is high!

We
performed our send-off show, Celebrate the Music, to an appreciative
audience of family, friends and new acquaintances on October 10. It included our
two contest sets and a veritable parade of quartets. Again, this year the show
included a Sing for Scholarships Contest. Five soloists from local high schools
performed for the audience who voted for their preferences. Scholarships from
$100 to $500 were awarded with matching amounts going to each singer's school
music department.
The
young vocal talent in Alaska was further highlighted by a special treat. We were
very pleased to present a group of about two dozen young women who were
participants in the first annual Alaska A Cappella University. Their
performance was directed by Nikki Blackmer,
director of
a cappella joy Chorus and the primary
faculty, along with members of Alaska Sound Celebration’s quartet,
Impromptu.
After
Nashville, we will have a guest night on November 10. Guests and members will
learn two new Christmas songs together and then perform those songs in our joint
Christmas show on December 18.
We want
to especially thank the Region for the many signs of moral support we have
received. It's so great knowing that you are cheering for us!

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _Blue Mountain Chorus
The
Blue Mountain
Chorus will be presenting Unforgettable.... the Times, the Tunes!
on Friday, Nov. 20 and Saturday, Nov. 21. We originally planned the show for
the previous weekend but learned the Elks had double-booked and we had to
change the date! Blueprint, one of our chorus quartets, graciously
gave up their trip to the Ovation
Quartet Workshop to be here performing with the chorus on the only
possible date available to us! We've been busy getting music, choreo, and
costuming ready for this show. It's a more intimate setting for us but we
will have a seating capacity of 350 at the Walla Walla Elks building. We
look forward to having those of you who are in the area in our audience!
Additionally, the chorus has begun some annual fundraisers: a
successful bulb sale, selling great coffee (with our own label!) at the
Saturday Market, and See's Candies for the holiday season. Chorus members
also contributed spare change weekly for the Young Singers Foundation.
Soon we will begin extensive advertising to promote our free
vocal lesson series in January of 2010. The six-week series has been well
attended in the past and we hope for good driving weather during January.
Our members are already making plans to attend the
International Convention and Competition in SEATTLE! Yeah!

Inland Harmony Show Chorus
In
October, we at
Inland Harmony
“blinged” up our denim and braved chilly wind to entertain at the Moscow Idaho
Farmer's Market. Three prospective members joined us in this performance
opportunity program singing three songs they learned in five weeks.
One prospective member is 14-years-old and
her dad drives her to rehearsal and stays! Another is a retired former
prospective member from 30 years ago who now has the time to sing with us and
the third is a wonderful vocalist in her 30s! We are so pleased to welcome them
and two other prospects that plan to return.
All will enjoy our extended performance
opportunity program through the holiday season with caroling at The University
Inn Best Western for several weekends in December.

Jet Cities Chorus
September was a busy month for
Jet Cities. Fresh from coaching with
Betty
Clipman at Summer Enrichment Time (SET), we enjoyed spending a Saturday in
September with Peggy
Gram for further work on our competition tunes.
Also this September, we joined the
Puyallup Valley Harmonizers
in staffing a barbershop booth in the Education Pavilion at the Western
Washington Fair -- one of the ten largest fairs in the world! More than
half of our members took turns staffing the table over a two-day period, talking
up our favorite hobby. Our enthusiasm must have been convincing, as five of the
ladies we spoke with, as well as several other guests, joined us for our Fall
Performance Opportunity Program (POP), which started in early October.
Finally,
September saw the creation of the Jet Cities Flight School, the
brainchild of chorus baritone, Stacey
Stevens. Flight School (with some of the
participants pictured right) meets twice weekly for members who wish to attend,
providing opportunities for impromptu sectionals, duetting, working on vocal
production, and lots of laughs!
The Flight School members, POP guests, and
a local dance ensemble will be performing with us at a community concert on
Sunday, November 8. We'd love to see you in our audience; visit
www.jetcities.org
for more details!

Seattle Shores
Seattle
Shores Chorus is proud to introduce their new director,
Judy
Cooper-MacLaren.
Judy began directing in May 2009 and replaces long-time director,
Bonnie
Willis, who recently retired.
Judy brings a wealth of musical experience and education to her new position
as director. She grew up in a musical family — her dad was first violinist with
the Winnipeg Junior Symphony. She had three sisters and would sing and harmonize
with them before they knew what four-part harmony and quartetting was all about!
Judy studied music in college and sang with various jazz ensembles, choirs and
performing groups while at college and in high school. Judy loved to perform in
musicals and had cast parts in Fiddler on the Roof, My Fair Lady and
South Pacific.
Judy says, “Sweet Adelines has been an amazing addition to my life, giving me
strengths and opportunities that may not have been available otherwise. I was
blessed to have my two eldest daughters join the chorus a few years ago and it's
a wonderful feeling to sing on the risers with your own kids! Now, having a
chance to direct has opened another door and I'm excited to take on this
challenge.”

Spirit of Spokane
Like all Sweet Adelines, the
Spirit of Spokane Chorus
knows the value of competition. It unifies us and creates strong bonds as our
combined efforts create something more powerful than ourselves. This was one
reason we enjoyed singing at the Veterans’ Administration National Wheelchair
Games in late July.
Athletes from around the nation, all of whom had already earned the
distinction of serving in our Armed Forces, came to Spokane for their annual
sports and skills competitions. We were privileged to sing the National Anthem
at the opening of the championship games of the swimming, quad rugby, and
wheelchair basketball competitions.
We felt honored to share our music in this way. The Star Spangled Banner
is never so easy to sing as when you are offering it before veterans and their
families and friends. Afterward, seeing those athletes compete, we thought of
the many months and years of practice that go into just a few minutes under the
lights. The athletes’ faces showed strain and supreme effort, as well as sheer
joy in physical exertion. It reminded us that we are all at our best when we are
making maximum use of our talents.

Voices Northwest Chorus
As with choruses everywhere,
Voices Northwest's
summer was filled with vacations; hot
weather, performances, fairs and community events, as well as planning
ahead for the coming year.
Lea Beverley
coached us three times (we love her!), choreographer,
Sharon
Marquardt
attended Erin Howden's fabulous visual performance event
in Toronto, and director,
Sue
Beck
participated in the
Side-by-Side director’s seminar held in Detroit
with judges and directors sharing knowledge and lots of good times!
All of our hard work will be showcased in an evening show following the Ovation
Workshop
with 2009 international champions, Moxie Ladies. The show is scheduled
for 7:00 pm, November 21, at the Historic Everett Theatre in downtown Everett.
In June, we performed a show called, On the Road Again, which was about an ill-fated vacation that ended up putting the gift
of Sweet Adelines into the heart of a
skeptic. This show in November, Movin’ Right Along, is Part II in the
adventures of ill-planned vacations. In addition to Moxie Ladies, the show will
feature 2009 International Sixth Place Medalists, Mojo; Region 13 quartet
champions, LiveWire; and, of course, Voices Northwest Chorus. You won’t
want to miss it!

Two opportunities
available for a discount on airfare to Anchorage
for competition!
The Regional Management Team understands this
year's trip may challenge your budget more than in other years,
and encourages you to start preparing NOW!! Save that spare change,
get out those airline miles, see if anyone wants to share a
companion fare, and keep an eye out for airfare sales. Additionally,
two separate opportunities exist that have the potential to get
you a reduced rate to Anchorage!
Opportunity #1:
The Convention Steering Committee has
secured a discount code on Alaska Airlines for anyone going to
Competition in Anchorage! You must make your reservations online
at
www.alaskaair.com, using this discount
code:
ECCMB1157.
Here are the details:
- Travel must originate from either Seattle
or Spokane.
- Travel must be between April 19 and April
30, 2010.
- The discount does not apply to any
promotional or companion fares.
- Tickets must be booked online. If
you call the group desk to make your reservations, there
will be a $15 charge.
- The "fine print" for this offer is
available
here.
Opportunity #2:
Alaska Airlines has
a special promotion each fall, called “Priced for Departure”
that coincides with the permanent fund dividend given to Alaska
residents. The Priced for Departure fares are
AVAILABLE
NOW and
must be purchased by November 2, 2009.
More information can be found by
clicking here.
Please note: you will not be able to
combine the 10% discount with the Priced for Departure fares.
Our recommendation is to price out your fare both ways--using
the 10% discount versus the promotional fare--and see what makes
sense for you.
Continental Airlines also flies
non-stop from Seattle to Anchorage, so look at their fares, too.
Please contact
Arlene Blackmer with any questions.

choruses can run like clock-work.
Be the change you want to see in your chorus.

Communications Coordinator
Wow,
this year is going fast! To all of you who do read regional e-mails and the
InTune… thank you! The team usually gets feedback only when something goes
wrong, but we know you’re out there.
I’m headed to Nashville to cheer on our
competitors and to participate in my first Regional Management Team (RMT) forum.
RMT members come together from all over the world to discuss issues with each
other and with Sweet Adelines executives to further our mission to support the
music that YOU make.
Everyone who is able to attend
International Convention brings something great back home. In 2010, the
convention will be in Seattle, WA...right in our own backyard! So, if you only
get to attend once, this is the one to attend!
Please send questions and feedback to me
about our regional communications. We are here to serve you and can do our best
when we know what you would like.

Director’s Coordinator
Summer
Enrichment Time (SET) was a fantastic event full of wonderful educational
opportunities for the directors in our region. We even had the opportunity to
have our director-cam videos of competition analyzed by Betty Clipman and our
chorus videos analyzed by Judy Poszgay.
As we look forward to the end of the year and competition next
year, I encourage all directors to break out their Director Certification
Program (DCP) modules and review tips for effective rehearsal planning. (There
is so much to do and so little time!) And, don’t forget conducting skills
because, as we know, our choruses will follow what they see!
I wish all directors and every member of our region a
song-filled holiday season!

I am very excited to
introduce you to a new feature article in the
InTune. It is called, Real
Women, Real Fun, Real NEW!
It is so fun to
welcome new members into our choruses. They are fresh and full of energy,
enthusiasm and new ideas!I attended the New Member Reception at Summer
Enrichment Time (SET) and it was such a treat to be in a room full of that
energy. As I met each new member and watched them interacting with each other, I
wished I knew them better and that I could meet every member when they
joined. That was the seed that started the idea for this new article.
Wouldn’t it be fun
if there was a place where we could spotlight each new member and recognize the
member who encouraged her to come? That is the vision behind, Real Women,
Real Fun, Real NEW!
Be sure to check out this new section in InTune
and see who's joined a chorus near you!

Region 13
has been busy since we met in Spokane for the annual convention. New members are
popping up all over the region!
For this
issue of InTune, we feature Pacific Sound Chorus, who
has added five new members since April. Rumor has it they have at least four
others “waiting in the wings!”. Way to go, PSC!
Vicki
Davern came
to a rehearsal with her long time co-worker, Randa Zaitz and was quickly
hooked!
Anne
Davids was
invited to a rehearsal by Cynthia Doyer. Anne says of the invitation, “Cynthia
called my office one day. One thing led to another and PSC was mentioned. I told
her I’d been looking for a chorus to sing with and she enthusiastically invited
me to come to a rehearsal, brought me a pamphlet, gave me the rehearsal info and
the rest is history!”
In July,
Alice Spencer was getting her mail and struck up a conversation with her
neighbor, Bonnie Kulvinskas. They began talking about singing, as Alice
knew that Bonnie was involved in a singing group. Bonnie invited Alice to come
with her to a PSC rehearsal.
Tonna
Kutner saw a
quartet at Seattle’s Folklife Festival, participated in the sing-along and then
found PSC.
Kathy
Woodford was
encouraged to visit PSC by friend, Mindy Engelberg. Mindy, who sang with
a chorus in Texas years ago, accompanied Kathy on her first visit to PSC.
To all of
these new members, welcome to Region 13!
