Speaking of the SAI website, have you checked out the Publicity/Membership resources available for download? There is a wealth of information available. Why invent the wheel if we can tweak it? If you have any questions or suggestions, please let me know.

Membership Coordinator

"Diamonds in Your Back Yard" is what I call current members: singers already on the risers who are worth their weight in GOLD! We all know it is cheaper to keep a great employee than to find a new one; the same can be said about helping our chorus members achieve life-long membership through strong retention programs and attention to detail.

Studies show that new members need hands-on nurturing for five years. Long time members also need to know how much we appreciate them! Let's give the attention, information, and adoration all of our members need to become firmly planted in the harmonious and happy land of Sweet Adelines International!

Reminder: Chapter-at-Large dues are due August 15th for all Region 13 CAL members! Please send your dues to Janice McKenna, Finance Coordinator, 19706-41st Avenue, NE; Lake Forest Park, WA; 98155.

On The Move with SET

The long-anticipated September Enrichment Training (SET) event with guest faculty quartet Rumors is fast-approaching! Sweet Adelines in North Pacific Region 13 are gathering in Richland, BC the weekend of September 19-21, 2008 to learn, sing, perform and socialize not only with one of the BEST Queens of Harmony quartets ever, but also with our long-standing friends and sisters to the north from Canadian Maple Leaf Region 26.

Don't miss the outstanding opportunity to partake in the knowledge and savvy of the barbershop craft that Rumors will be sharing on this fantastic weekend! Regions 13 and 26 have been planning this workshop for several years now and are so fortunate to have Rumors for faculty, as this will be their next-to-last "hurrah" before retiring after International Convention in Honolulu.

The early bird registration cost of $50 (US$) is due August 19, 2008; late registration continues through September 6 and is $60 (US$). Hotel reservations must be made by August 19 with the Best Western Richmond Hotel: 800-663-0299 (tell them you're with Sweet Adelines to get the lowest rate of $149 (Can$) for a double-double).

In addition to proposed performances by internationally bound quartets, choruses, and Rumors, you will be able to participate in a variety of classes such as:

"How to Build a Wall of Sound"
  "Sing Your Part Smart"
  "Listening Skill Building"
  "How to Learn Choreography"
  "Director Conducting"
  "Breath Art"
  "Orff" (Huh?!?)
  "Rhythmic Body Movement"
  "Quartet Self-Coaching"
  "Ballad Phrasing"
  "Blending Skills for Musical Leaders"
  "Put Your Best Face Forward"
  "Barbershop Ain't Square", and
"Director Workshop on the Art and Craft of Teaching"

Questions? Contact Region 13 SET Chair Juanita Harwood or Region 13 Education Coordinator Patty Martin. Additional details and forms are available on the Region 13 website.

BE THERE OR BE SQUARE! I'm sure not going to miss this workshop...see you there, my friends!

IES: What an Experience

“San Antonio in JULY? You must be crazy!”

This was not the first summer I’d heard these words from friends who are not Sweet Adelines, but those in the know always want to pack themselves in my luggage! The hilly campus of Texas' Trinity University, the heat, and the humidity are easily outweighed by the hunger to better understand our craft, by the hours spent being inspired, energized and challenged by International Education Symposium (IES) faculty and each other, and by the heartwarming friendships formed and renewed.

Region 13 directors attended IES in force!
FIFTEEN Region 13 directors attended IES this year! From left to right: (front:) Karen Leet, Alaska Sound Celebration; Mike Elliott, Spirit of Spokane. (R2:) Susan Kegley, Pacific Sound; Dottee Rambo, Olympia; Peggy McBride, Alaska Sound Celebration. (R3:) Sally Wallace, Coeur d'Alene; Becky Pope, Inland Harmony; Karen Byington, Inland Harmony. (R4) Diana Thomas, RiversEdge; Teresa McCafferty, Jet Cities; Sue Beck, Voices Northwest; Nikki Blackmer, a cappella joy. (R5:) Andi Flores, Blue Mountain; Cheryl Isaacs, Harmony Northwest; Lucy Heinkel, Rolling Hills.

Directors (and there were 15 who attended from Region 13; see above!) were afforded an extra day during which we got to know Dr. Jim Henry, the guest faculty for the week. Barbershoppers recognize that he was the bass in Gas House Gang, is currently director of the Barbershop Society's Ambassadors of Harmony, and has been directing since he was a teenager. More impressive than his considerable musical education is his philosophy that we sing to change people’s lives; our own and that of our audiences. Each of his presentations during the week challenged directors to ensure our rehearsals and performances are worthy of that (no pressure!).

Such well-known Sweet Adelines as Charla Esser, Dale Syverson, Ase Hagerman, and Lori Lyford greeted attendees each morning with improvisation, rhythmic and vocal experiences. Tibetan monks and paper plates will forever be reminders to sing freely and have fun! Then we all went our different ways to soak in the knowledge, energy and inspiration from the over 50 international faculty members who taught over 200 classes that week. The campus buzzed with ideas being shared, songs being sung, and friendships being formed.

2008 is the last year SAI will hold IES, which had an excellent 10-year run. I especially appreciated the international aspect: the chance to share experiences and ideas with women from New Zealand and Sweden, to share a beer with gals from the Netherlands, to share email addresses with the director of the Dubai chorus, to share a suite with three-fourths of a quartet from New Jersey. I will miss that.

Fortunately, SAI is committed to provide quality education to as many members as possible. Webster’s New World Dictionary defines the source of "symposium" as an entertainment characterized by drinking, music, and intellectual discussion. Seems to me that wherever there is a gathering of Sweet Adelines, there is a symposium.

IES may have concluded but the spirit lives on with Area Schools, so you, too, can benefit from these wonderful educational events. And now they’ll be closer to home, more affordable and accessible for everyone!  What could be better than a weekend filled with stimulating classes, top-notch faculty…and Sweet Adeline spirit!?!

Little-Known Facts About Convention Hotels

Did you know the region negotiates and signs contracts for convention hotels five to six years prior to the events? We have been going to the Doubletree Hotel in Spokane for a number of years, and contracts have been signed for the future. Within these contracts are specific items pertaining to our stay, and we are bound by the contracts to follow these terms.

At a post-convention meeting, an oversight was brought to our attention regarding the use of public space at this past convention. The Steering Committee realized the necessity of making contract issues public to every member of the region to ensure our continued good relationship with the Doubletree, and we'd like to explain the parameters for using the public meeting spaces at the hotel.

All of our contracted meeting space is assigned through the Steering Committee’s Convention Housing/Catering Chair, who works in tandem with the hotel Event Manager. By contract, ANY FOOD/BEVERAGE THAT WILL BE CONSUMED IN THESE SPACES MUST BE PROVIDED BY THE HOTEL.

This affects any chorus or other regional group wishing to have a hospitality room, a room to read score sheets, an afterglow, etc.   If you want any food or beverages in these rooms, arrangements must be made with the hotel to supply these items. The rooms are assigned per chorus or group by the Housing/Catering Chair. The set-up and banquet services requests are handled by the Doubletree Event Manager, after the rooms have been assigned.

So, in your chorus planning for next spring, you are now "in the know". In the next issue of InTune, look for an article on room blocks and housing. By the time convention comes next spring, everyone will be familiar with the "little-known facts" of the hotel business!

Chorus Chatter

Olympia Chorus

Save this date: October 4, 2008! The Olympia Chapter's 'annual show will be everything you've always expected from these incredibly talented women. The production is titled "Come Rain or Shine!" and will feature local quartets, actors and headliners guaranteed to keep your toes a-tappin' and your hands a-clappin'!

The show will expand upon the contrasts between the West and East sides of the great state of Washington; the ever-changing weather as well as the diversities in the landscapes! Two meteorologists--The Northwest Weathergirls--will be reporting to the main news channel, SING 5. Both weathergirls are vying for the attention of their head newscaster, Norman. Enjoy as the hilarity ensues! All of this is in the midst of Norman reporting on the A Cappella Harmony Festival where the Olympia Sweet Adelines are entertaining thousands of music lovers in their barbershop style. “Singin' in the Rain”, “The Bluest Skies You've Ever Seen Are In Seattle”, “It's Rainin' Men” and “Java Jive” are a few of the songs that will be performed.

Some of the music in this year’s show will also be performed at Carnegie Hall in New York City in February, 2009, where Olympia has been invited to sing. They are very proud to have the opportunity to share a little bit of the Northwest with our Eastern United States friends.

So come to the Kenneth J. Minnaert Center for the Arts on the campus of South Puget Sound Community College, 2011 Mottman Road SW, Olympia, on Saturday October 4th at 2:00 and 7:00 pm. Tickets are $10 for seniors/students and $15 for adults. Parking on campus is free.

Spirit of Spokane Chorus

We never know when and how we might touch someone with our music. The Spirit of Spokane Chorus had a recent performance, made possible by just such an encounter.

Last year "Lisa" came to visit, but decided she didn't have the time commitment necessary to join. Fast forward a year, when we received a phone call from her. Lisa is now the Customer Service Manager at the main post office in Spokane, and was overseeing the installation ceremony of the new postmaster, Ms. Karen Fairlee. Being the first female postmaster ever in the city, Ms. Fairlee wanted the installation to involve women. Lisa had kept our card, and after explaining the request and the format of the ceremony, asked if we could do it? Of course we said "Yes".

Spirit of Spokane Chorus

The catch was that three songs were requested: "The Star-Spangled Banner", "Battle Hymn of the Republic", and "Hey, Mister Postman". We were fine with the first two; however, the last one involved a bit of creativity! We found the words and the melody line, and with the help of our director, Mike Elliott, added some "doo-wah" chords, learned it in a week, and added a very large visual of an envelope with "Postage Due" on it, which added some fun to the ceremony. What a wonderful experience we had preparating and performing. Ms. Fairlee loved it, as well, even singing along with us on the postman song!

The best part of the experience: discovering how much closer and stronger we became as a chorus...and having fun in the process!

Quartets Corner

Greetings from Mojo!

With just three months to go before International Competition, Mojo has been hard at work preparing to hit the stage--as Contestant #1 in the Semifinals--and give the performance of our lives! Over the past few months, we've had the good fortune to work with some amazing coaches: Dale Syverson (twice!) Erin Howden, Jan Carley (yes … we're working on our inner Mojo too!) and "Awesome" Joe Connelly. Coming up on the coaching calendar we'll be working with Sandy Robinson Marron, Carole Kirkpatrick and again with Dale Syverson.

Since Calgary, we've had many wonderful and memorable experiences, including performances on the Alaska Sound Celebration Show and Columbia River Chorus Show. We also had the opportunity to mic test and perform on the Show of Champions at both Region 26 and Region 13's conventions and had a great time teaching a class in Region 13. In July, we had a fun time performing on the annual An-a-Chords show in Anacortes, Washington.

Check out our website at: www.mojoquartet.com (with special thanks to our wonderful "fifth" member, Chris Rimple). We have a new "guestbook" section--and--if you're all out of Entertainers Secret or have been meaning to give it a try, just follow the links to learn how you can get a bottle of this wonderful product.

We are so appreciative of all the love and support we've received from both Regions 13 and 26. We hope to see many of you at the joint SET/Fall Regional Workshop in Richmond, BC.

Mojo: Corinna, Julie, Patti & Judy
