Your Ovation Management Team

From the RMT

Communications Coordinator

Susan Soderberg

Some of you may remember my array of clothing changes during chorus competition last year.  That shtick evolved from an effort to get a variety of new “faces” involved in all levels of Region 13 activities – all I had to do was say “yes” when an invitation came. The call for theme-and-logo ideas for next year’s regional convention is another way to bring out Region 13’s hidden artistic talents...have you entered yet? Your RMT buttonholed members at SET looking for new leaders to nurture for 2008 and beyond.  You are treasured regional assets!

Opportunities abound at all levels of Sweet Adelines. Last month RMT members volunteered, along with other Region 13 members, as Convention Assistants in Calgary. What a fantastic opportunity! We had memorable experiences escorting fellow singers from around the world behind the scenes, during rehearsals, riding on buses, waiting impatiently to walk onstage, grinning from ear to ear as they exited! International could not run its yearly efforts without assistants...but we felt like the luckiest Sweet Adelines in Calgary.

Regional leadership--creative and/or administrative--is no exception. We actively seek members from ALL choruses to work on committees and be mentored for future RMT openings. Location, size of chorus, experience: there are no impediments to service. We educate! We take you under our wings! Email or call any RMT member and let us know what you would like to do or where your talents lie. We’ll help you find a special niche.  Think BIG! Think outside your comfort zone!

Say “yes” when your invitation comes.

Sequins and livestock, what a combination!  I must have been in Calgary! No, not for the Stampede...for our International Convention.

Pengrowth Saddledome was host to both our convention and a livestock show! Competing choruses and quartets were fabulous, including our own Region 13 Champions, Spirit of Spokane and Mojo! Whether you were in Calgary or listening to the webcast, the perfor-mances this year were fantastic.

This time of year reminds me anything is possible. It’s not just about competing; it’s also about getting the opportunity to know women from all over the world and to share our love for this art form with the people we meet in stores, restaurants and on the street. It reminds me to share this passion in my own town, everyday.

Can you tell a pitch is coming? Yup, if you have marketing ideas, I’d love to hear from you. We are all members of the Marketing Team; every person you interact with could be or know a potential member, sponsor or client. Give me a call, drop me a snail-mail note or email me

Membership Coordinator

Gayle Robinson

Can it really be that I am going into my fourth year on the Region #13 Regional Management Team?  It seems like just yesterday when I received a phone call from then Region 13 Communica-tions Coordinator, Anne Sutherland, asking if I'd consider being the next regional Membership and Marketing Coordinator (a position that has since been divided into two jobs). My exact response was, “Well, probably... what exactly does that mean?”

Looking back, I am so glad my answer was “Yes” as it opened an entire new world of learning and friendships for me. "Marketing? Who me? Never!" has become “Sure, I can do that!”. And Membership is a piece of cake. The skills I learned through classes offered via in-region training, at IES, and on my own at a nearby community college have opened an entire new field of interest for me. I had been a member of the region for over 30 years but had no real idea of how the governance worked. My appreciation for those who served before me has grown even greater as I came to understand that Region 13 has been at the forefront in pioneering various avenues of governance and education in the SAI world.

My greatest joy over these past years has been the opportunity to work with and get to know many splendid women who all have the same goals…to shape the education and activities of Region 13. We must attempt to meet the expressed needs and desires of our membership. We must pay close attention to the comments of the judges who adjudicate our yearly convention to not only “judge” us, but to share ideas to help us become more proficient in vocal production and performance.

As my second term moves closer to its end, I would like to invite all who might have even a tiny interest in becoming a part of this team to contact me. I will be happy to share with you the scope of this position and know that I plan to be available to our next Membership Manager as a mentor in the future.

Consider becoming a member of the Regional Management Team! Give me a call!

Something's Fishy!

Singing at Pike Place Market

Members of the New Zealand/Australia "Kiwi Chorus" decided to serenade the fish throwers at Seattle's Pike Place Market with a beautiful Maori lullaby. One of the workers (or maybe the King Crab!) decided to direct. See Voices Northwest's article below.

Educational Opportunities

The Education Direction Team (EDT), under the umbrella of Region #13’s Education Coordinator, Patty Martin, has been meeting, brainstorming, and having a great time planning for future educational opportunities.

‘Tis the time of year when International Competition is history, the holidays are approaching, and you think you have some “down time” to relax before careening headlong into 2008. NOT! Shows, retreats, and coaching sessions are already on your calendars, right? To make your 2008 calendars more complete, grab a pencil, and get ready to save the dates for some great educational opportunities:

April 24-27: REGIONAL CONTEST

Friday morning will again showcase educational classes. Plan to come in Thursday night to be ready early Friday morning for this opportunity.

June 20-21 (tentative):  DIRECTORS/REGIONAL FACULTY WORKSHOP

Friday night for Directors, Saturday classes for faculty and other musical leaders. Look for more details in the next InTune.

September 19-21:  SET WITH REGION 26
Logistics, classes, and other details are being finalized, but you won’t want to miss this fantastic event with Rumors and our friends from Canada!

Okay, put your pencils down, and take heed of this next item.  We have a wonderful program in place called “Together and Growing” a.k.a. the TAG program. There is a list of over 30 topics lead by our regional faculty members, who are just waiting to be invited to work with your choruses.

Sally Wallace is heading the TAG team; visits may be scheduled any time from now through December 2008. Contact Sally for details of topics, dates, and registration forms.

These are the major educational events on the books; look for others as we head into the new year. The goal of the EDT is to plan for the future; to that end, we’re already planning into 2010-2011! Isn’t education awesome?!

RMT Meeting Highlights

The RMT met on September 22, 2007 via two teleconference locations: Seattle, WA and Anchorage, AK.  The highlights of our meeting include:

SET 2007
Attendance was good and feedback regarding the faculty and class choices was very positive. Diane Porsch, faculty, complimented the Education Coordinator on the way the school was run.

SET 2008
This will be a joint education event with Region 26 in September 2008, with Rumors as the faculty. The location is scheduled to be in Vancouver, B.C. We discussed concerns over costs for the weekend in comparing Region 13 and Region 26 historical registration fees.  RMT is in consensus to keep registration fees down so as to encourage higher attendance. Coaching for champions, two choruses and two quartets, is possible with there being four faculty members. Discussed potential of a show Saturday night (separate ticket) with Rumors performing along with the champion chorus and quartets. Potential of revenue is present, but logistics of the RMTs from 13 and 26, joint or individual, and/or a chorus running the show as a fundraiser, are considerable.

Convention 2008 and Beyond
We discussed issues regarding the continuance of the webcast and the Director’s Cam. There were technical issues in 2007 with the webcast which should be able to be addressed for 2008. Suggestions were made for obtaining additional sponsorship of the cost for the webcast outside of donations during the event. The Director’s liked their Cam but would suggest that it be moved to a different location than the side view. Contracts are being signed through 2012 in accordance with SAI rules for having contracts for five year out. Locations for 2013 – 2015 are being discussed.

TAG Visits 2008
We have entered the alternating cycle for Area Schools and TAG visits.

Area Schools 2007
Schools were held in Washington and Alaska during the summer.

Education Direction
Reviewed report from Patty Martin on goals and objectives from the Education Direction Meetings.

Revitalization and Prospective Choruses
Reviewed status of prospective choruses and chorus in revitalization.

RMT Nominating Committee
Janice McKenna will head the nominating committee for RMT 2008 – 2010 term, and will solicit two volunteers to complete the committee. Positions available are Marketing Coordinator, Membership Coordinator, Education Coordinator and Events Coordinator.

In-Tune
We discussed length of articles and advertising requests.

Chorus Chatter

Coeur d'Alene Chorus

The Coeur d’Alene Chorus recently spent a wonderful evening with our neighbors to the south...the FAR south! As many of you know, a large contingent of singers from New Zealand competed at the international competition in Calgary, BC. Their group was represented by seven New Zealand choruses, including Greater Auckland Chorus, Christchurch City Chorus, Nelsons Bay Harmony Chorus, and two choruses from Australia. Since the competition, they have been touring the Pacific Northwest in two very large tour buses with a number of friends and family.

We planned a dinner, to be followed with--of course--singing. As we were planning, the chorus heard from many regional members who wanted an opportunity to meet our New Zealand sisters. In the end, we hosted 150 guests, including Region 13 members from Inland Harmony, Mountain Melodies, and Spirit of Spokane. Region 10 was represented by Jackie Hall, from Mesquite Magic Chorus...a sound judge at International who was “coerced” by the Kiwis to join their tour. As the New Zealand directors were not on the tour, Jackie filled in for them and everyone seemed to enjoy it immensely.

Entertainment included the quartets Pepper and Accent from the Spokane and Coeur d’Alene choruses, and the irreverently entertaining men’s quartet, Inspiration, from the local Barbershop Harmony Society. The Coeur d’Alene Chorus sang several numbers, then was joined by other Region 13 members for some of our regional songs. Finally, we were serenaded by our New Zealand guests. They sang several familiar songs then ended with two songs sung in both English and Maori; it was truly beautiful. The evening wrapped up with all of us ascending the risers to sing Harmonize the World and How We Sang Today. The resulting sound rang through the walls and out the ceiling!

What a wonderful experience to be able to share our time and voices with our New Zealand sisters!

Jet Cities Chorus

Jet Cities is wrapping up a busy year with an exciting show on November 10, called An Evening with Bergman. The "Bergman" we are featuring is none other than Nancy Bergman, Sweet Adelines Master Music Arranger and a recipient of a Lifetime Achievement Award. Nancy will be our very special emcee, along with Sue Beck, and we will be helping her celebrate her 80th birthday as well! Special guest performers for the evening are The Buzz Quartet, 2005 Sweet Adelines Queens of Harmony and Region 13’s own LiveWire Quartet. The show will be held at the Renton Ikea Theater, 400 S. Second Street, Renton. Tickets are still available for General Admission seating at $20 each; to order, call Angie at (253) 880-2672  or e-mail: tickets@jetcities.org

Once the show is over, Jet Cities will jump right into our Christmas performances, plus begin preparing for our fourth annual Sweetie Pie Social to be held in February. Then, onto competition! We hope to ring a chord or two with many of you at our shows and, of course, in Spokane.

Kitsap Pines Chorus

During the summer, Kitsap Pines gained two new members and one prospective member who helped us prepare our READY, SET, GROW membership drive for September. With their fresh perspective as recent guests, we were able to wrap our six-week program by graduating eight prospective members, and look forward to several auditions. New friends are bringing their friends, so we continue to grow even after READY, SET, GROW has ended! How cool is that?!?

Adding this many new voices and faces to our small chorus is great fun and makes for a lively time on the risers. We can’t wait to spend the holidays singing with all these new voices!

Pacific Sound Chorus

The phenomenon of dual membership, allowing more members of Sweet Adelines to participate in competitions at the international level, has taken on quite a life of its own! To that end, Pacific Sound Chorus members and its director, Susan Kegley, send you a warm invitation to consider riding the (sound) waves to Honolulu in November of 2008 with us!

The suggested timeline for indicating your interest in dual membership with Pacific Sound Chorus for this purpose is May 6, 2008. Please contact us for comprehensive information sheets if you are considering this exciting adventure.

Seattle Shores Chorus

After many years at Prince of Peace Church, Seattle Shores Chorus is moving our rehearsal site to a new location, just down the road. We will now be located at the Filipino-American Christian Church at 14800 First Avenue in Shoreline. We now will be right next to I-5 on the west side of the freeway.
Seattle Shores has been very busy learning new music and brushing up on our Christmas songs. This is normally a time for many performances and we will be performing at both the Tacoma and Seattle Christmas Gift Shows. A number of quartets will be strolling Victorian Carolers at their Christmas festivities. There are always many invitations, so these are just the first to come in.
Last week the chorus made the final decision on our new costume for competition. Look for us as we strut out stuff in a new look.  See you there!

Spirit of Spokane Chorus

Though the road to Calgary crosses beautiful mountains and majestic valleys, the Spirit of Spokane Chorus found more than breathtaking scenery on our way to the Sweet Adelines International Contest in Calgary. We opened our hearts to new friends, our minds to new experiences, and even gained more than just a chance to sing with the best from all over the world.

Click for full-size photo!

On fun but frenzied Saturdays once a month, our “Calgary Chorus” of about 50 core members of Spirit of Spokane and 24 dual members, learned to sing together and to bring our happy hobo characters to life. Many “duals” even joined us for our regular Tuesday rehearsals, further cementing bonds of friendship that can never be replaced. As Team Leader Carran Kelley said, “This chorus is an example of what is possible when we share our optimism, determination, and joy in singing.”

For many, the character we decided to portray was a tremendous step outside of the old comfort zone. Wearing oversized pants, suspenders, silly hats, and dirt on our faces, we learned to let go of careful performing and have fun. Our entry onto the International stage brought a buzz from the audience as they wondered what such cute clowns could be up to. Afterward, the many smiles and congratulations on our fun performance confirmed that daring to be different was worth all the effort.

Our director, Mike Elliott, told us that “our growth through the journey to Calgary is our gold medal” and he was right. The six minutes on stage at International pales in comparison to the truly meaningful journey that took place in the months and weeks before we ever left home.

Prospective Voices Northwest Chorus

Click for full-size photo!

Voices Northwest, of Snohomish, Washington, was visited on October 22nd by a New Zealand Sweet Adelines tour group on the final leg of their bus tour from Calgary after our international convention. Several members of top ten chorus, Christchurch City Chorus, were part of the tour group.

Two VNW members traveled with them for the day and acted as tour guides through Seattle. They took them sightseeing in Pike Place Market and to the Space Needle. Afterwards, the whole group visited our Snohomish rehearsal location to enjoy "a home cooked meal" provided by VNW members
after which we performed for each other and spent some time visiting together. It was a fun experience singing with the Sweet Adeline members from around the globe as we stood shoulder to shoulder and sang our songs of harmony. Sweet Adelines are proud to have "sisters" all over the world and we were thrilled to share some time with our “Kiwi” sisters. Both chorus directors are certified judges. The New Zealand chorus was directed by Sound and Expression Judge, Jackie Hall who lives in San Angelo, Texas and directs her own chorus in Region 10, and was touring with the Kiwi Chorus. We are directed by our own Showmanship Judge/director Sue Beck who lives in Everett.
